About the role

The Infrastructure Automation Engineering Service will support the technical team responsible for the design, development, documentation, building and validation of infrastructure automation components which form part of a significant defence programme. These automation components are primarily developed using Python3 (low-level automation), Ansible (deployment), Jenkins (configuration generation and build pipelines) and Bash (Linux) / PowerShell (Windows Server), with a focus on hardware components - their features, services and configurations - and interactions with external REST/SOAP APIs and services. The team’s responsibilities include:

  • Apply complex problem solving to “reverse engineer” applications, designs and manual build instructions to create zero-touch automation packages that are parameterised, dynamic and able to repeatedly and reliably deploy against these designs (often legacy or automation-resistive applications).
  • Create production-quality code following best practices and internal policies, using version control (GIT, BitBucket) and peer-reviewing modules.
  • Production and review of all levels of design artefacts.
  • Supporting wider programme system-testing activities.
  • Working with Service Management to resolve issues.
  • Working within the Atlassian Suite for tasking/scheduling (JIRA) and documentation (Confluence).

Essential skills, qualifications & experience

At least 12 months’ hands-on experience within the last 3 years of: creating complex Python3 automation classes for production systems; configuration management tools (Ansible, Puppet, Chef); scripting (Bash and PowerShell for in-OS automation); automated deployment of server/network/storage across multiple vendors; building/supporting large infrastructure environments; troubleshooting hardware or software failure; Agile development teams. Plus advanced Python3 and PowerShell features (Workflows, DSC, Bare Metal Deployment).

At least one certification within the last five years: CCNP (networking); VMware VCP (virtualisation); RHCA/RHCE (Linux); OCA (software development). Also: strong communication; strong analytical skills; valid SC clearance; MS Office competency.

Desirable

Atlassian toolset (JIRA, Confluence, Bamboo). Public-sector experience - preferably Defence, ideally Defence Digital (formerly ISS); delivering accredited secure solutions in the UK Public Sector.
