Network Engineer
£600–700 per day (Inside IR35)
About the role — Overview
Astuco is recruiting a Network Engineer to strengthen the engineering team behind a major UK Defence command-and-control enablement programme. You’ll help shape, build, document and assure the physical and virtual networking that underpins the platform’s core infrastructure. Across the team, the work centres on:
- Engineering, assembling and validating every networking element that makes up the platform.
- Authoring and peer-reviewing design artefacts at all levels of detail.
- Backing the programme’s wider system-integration and testing activities.
- Partnering with Service Management to investigate and resolve issues.
The position suits an established network engineer operating at CCNP standard or above. A current, in-date certificate isn’t mandatory — but you will need to evidence equivalent, demonstrable capability. Your focus will be refining designs, configuring and testing networks, and turning them into secure, repeatable build patterns, with clear engineering documentation produced alongside every configuration item. You’ll also represent the service in stakeholder sessions, setting out and defending design decisions to other specialists who may hold firm or differing views — always anchoring your recommendations in agreed, endorsed user requirements.
Candidate Requirements — Essential
- Network monitoring and traffic analysis to protect performance, security and service availability.
- Hands-on hardware and software configuration spanning deployment and lifecycle management.
- Strong technical writing and knowledge-sharing that lifts the wider team’s capability.
- Input into longer-term network infrastructure planning for resilience and continuous improvement.
- Confident stakeholder engagement, building trusted relationships across technical and non-technical audiences.
- Practical, demonstrable experience with VMware ESXi 8.0.3.
- Practical, demonstrable experience with VMware vSphere 8.0.3.
Candidate Requirements — Desirable
It is highly advantageous to bring hands-on experience across the core data-centre networking stack:
- Cisco Nexus and Cisco IOS XE.
- Leaf-and-spine fabric design.
- VXLAN overlay networking.
- Dual-Cloud Dual-Hub DMVPN.
- Layer-3 multicast / PIM.
- Firewall IPS/IDS.
- AAA platforms such as Cisco ISE.
Further nice-to-haves include:
- Network operations and management for resilient, efficient service delivery.
- Fault diagnosis and dependable third-line technical support.
- Deep Cisco networking knowledge, ideally with CCNA Instructor accreditation.
- EIGRP routing and operational best practice.
- Quality of Service (QoS) and DSCP tuning to improve the end-user experience.
- QoS optimisation for Voice-over-IP services.
- A system-of-systems mindset for complex technical environments.
- Awareness of cyber security and regulatory-compliance obligations.
- Linux (Ubuntu 24.04).
- Cisco Unified Call Manager (CUCM) v15.x.
